Create your own meaningful celebration of new beginnings

A naming ceremony is a wonderful way to welcome a new child into your family and community. Whether for a newborn or an adopted child, our celebrants create warm, inclusive ceremonies that celebrate the joy of new life.

What is a naming ceremony?

The ceremony welcomes your child and formally announces their name. It typically includes readings, promises from parents and guide parents (similar to godparents), and symbolic elements you choose.

What are guide parents?

Guide parents are like godparents but without the religious connotations. They make promises to support your child throughout their life. You can have as many as you like!

At what age should we have a naming ceremony?

Any age! While many are held in the first year, there’s no time limit. We’ve celebrated naming ceremonies for adopted children of all ages too.

A naming ceremony is a non-religious alternative to a christening, but it’s so much more than just announcing a name. It’s a chance to formally welcome your child, make promises about how you’ll raise them, and appoint guide parents (the secular equivalent of godparents) who pledge to support your child throughout their life.

The ceremony can include a wide range of symbolic elements — planting a tree, a time capsule, a wishing tree where guests write messages for the future, or a sand ceremony symbolising the blending of families. Many parents also choose to include favourite readings, songs, or poems.

Naming ceremonies are perfect for any age child, including adopted children, step-children, or children from blended families. They’re also ideal if you want a celebration that includes family members of different faiths or beliefs.
